## The rebrand, explained

Piraeus Bank's new identity arrived at a symbolic moment. Kathimerini reported that the bank presented the change as the start of a new era as it returned to the private sector after the recent divestment of the state. Newsbeast reported on 29 May 2024 that the logo had already changed on the bank's website and that the new corporate image would reach branches gradually, along with new symbols, communication, branch design and, soon, a new name for its electronic banking.

The bank described the logo as an evolution of the previous design. The familiar three lines remain, but their direction has been reversed. In the bank's words, quoted by Kathimerini, the three emblematic lines now point decisively forward, embodying the principles of responsibility, merit and transparency. The word bank has been dropped from the name, which now appears in English only. Yellow and grey dominate the palette, with the name set in deep green. As part of the overhaul, the online platform Winbank would be renamed Piraeus E-banking on 4 June, with the app updating automatically.

The official framing was broad. Newsbeast quoted the bank saying it stands firmly beside society and the economy, aims to respond effectively to people's needs, seize opportunities, provide solutions and create prospects and prosperity, and builds the big picture of Greece through customers' small personal stories. That is the language of a lender eager to be seen as a national institution again rather than a state owned one.

Reversing the lines is a clever, cheap gesture. It keeps the equity of a mark every Greek customer knows and changes its meaning from backward to forward with a single flip, which suits a bank leaving state ownership. Dropping Bank is fashionable and fine. The palette is the weak spot: yellow, grey and deep green is a busy combination, and the green wordmark beside yellow lines loses some of the punch of the old boxed square. Retiring Winbank, a recognisable digital name, in favour of the bland Piraeus E-banking also trades distinctiveness for consistency. The overall direction is right, and the metaphor is easy to understand, perhaps too easy.

In short: Same lines, facing forward.
