## The rebrand, explained

PayPal introduced a refreshed identity by Pentagram in September 2024, and the studio says it launched with the new PayPal Debit Card. Pentagram describes the direction as simpler, cleaner, more modern and more optimistic. The work, led by Andrea Trabucco-Campos and his team in New York, rests on principles of simplicity, optimism and trust, with the aim of making PayPal accessible to "Everyone, everywhere."

The rebrand followed a change of leadership. Alex Chriss became chief executive in September 2023 and, as Payments Dive reported, set out to turn a payments company into a commerce platform. He hired Geoff Seeley as chief marketing officer in February 2024. Pentagram says it worked closely with Seeley and with Diego Scotti, who led PayPal's consumer group and its global marketing and communications.

The wordmark now leads the system. It is set in PayPal Pro, a customized version of Lineto's LL Supreme, which is itself a contemporary redrawing of Paul Renner's 1927 Futura. Pentagram says the face is built from straight lines and circular curves, and that it was developing a second face, PayPal Pro Text, with Lineto and PayPal for small sizes.

Color moved to a neutral black and white, with blues kept as accents, which Pentagram says sets the logo apart from the blue common in fintech. The yellow of the old palette went, and the yellow payment buttons in the product turned black. The monogram keeps the angle of its layered letters, loses its rounded corners and is no longer locked up with the wordmark. Its bright and deep blues overlap to reveal Venmo blue.

Motion is based on everyday payment gestures: tapping, clicking, flipping and swiping. Pentagram says it oversaw the implementation of the system, including an advertising campaign by BBH Global starring Will Ferrell. Brand Innovators reported that the spot was PayPal's largest US ad campaign to date and that it was timed to the return of the NFL season.

Reaction was cool. A survey by Atom found that 91 percent of American consumers preferred the old logo, and an essay in UX Collective called the new identity generic, a symptom of technology brands converging on the same minimalism. PayPal's newsroom media resources still offer the 2024 wordmark and monogram as its primary logos.

In short: A black PayPal Pro wordmark and a freestanding monogram.
