## The rebrand, explained

By 2022 PayPal's most recognisable piece of design arguably wasn't its logo at all, but the payment button sitting at the bottom of millions of checkout pages. The new brand strategy and visual identity, built by PayPal's in-house brand team with New York studio Gretel, accepts that and works from it.

The button is the stated inspiration for the system. Gold, until then part of the checkout experience, joins blue in the primary palette, so the colour people already link to paying with PayPal becomes part of the brand proper. The existing monogram of two locked Ps stays, but is now also used as a framing device. Creative Review quotes the team saying the idea is to turn individual users, small business owners or CFOs into the protagonists of their own story.

Design Week called it a people-first refresh and Creative Review described the monogram reworked as a frame for customer stories. Accessibility was a stated priority: the refreshed logo was built to meet the strictest AAA contrast level, and the system introduced a new typeface, PayPal Open. It lasted barely two years. In 2024 PayPal replaced it with a black wordmark in a custom Futura-based typeface, and Fast Company noted the familiar blue wordmark was gone; the yellow was dropped from the new palette.

The 2022 system did not last long. In September 2024 The Verge reported a new Pentagram identity built on a plain black wordmark in a bespoke typeface, PayPal Pro, based on a redrawing of Futura, which the company justified as standing apart from the blue that has become synonymous with fintech. The writer pointed out how much blue remained in the launch images and put it alongside GoDaddy and Petco as another recognisable mark flattened into plain text. Two refreshes in just over two years suggest the 2022 work was a holding pattern rather than a destination.

This is an evolution rather than a new mark, and that is the right call. Instead of inventing new equity, it promotes what customers already see every day, the yellow button, into the main identity. The monogram-as-frame is the riskier part, since a device like that can look like a template if it is overused.

In short: PayPal finally designed around the thing people actually recognise: the button.
