## The rebrand, explained

Payoneer announced its rebrand on 22 June 2021, shortly before it was due to begin trading on Nasdaq under the ticker PAYO after a merger with the blank cheque company FTAC Olympus, at an enterprise value of about 3.3 billion dollars. The company said the new brand reflected its current market position and its vision to be the world's go-to partner for digital commerce everywhere, marking the move from young disrupter to industry leader. Chief executive Scott Galit called it the era of Open Commerce.

The design rests on two ideas. The release said the new brand colour is universal, reflecting a promise to be for everyone everywhere, and that the new symbol is a circle, illustrating the journey to becoming a single destination, unified and connected in more places than anyone else. Transform magazine's Elettra Scrivo, reporting two days later, summarised the rebrand as focused on the concept of universality, with the circle representing that goal.

American Banker's David Heun put the business case more bluntly. Payoneer had changed its logo messaging to emphasise a broader range of services, and its new rainbow-themed logo signals that it has pushed beyond its original payment offerings, while the traditional orange is still present. Marketing vice president Jonny Steel told him that the company realised during the process that it was not easy to define what Payoneer is, and that the brand did not articulate where it was or wanted to go. The spectrum, he said, illustrates open digital commerce as something available to everyone. Consultant Steve Mott added that the marketing had to steer people away from thinking of Payoneer as just a prepaid card provider.

That is the honest version: a rebrand timed to a listing, aimed at investors who might otherwise file Payoneer under prepaid cards. The circle and the rainbow are defensible but generic; global fintech has no shortage of round symbols and spectrum gradients, and universal is a word that makes a colour sound like a strategy. Keeping a trace of the orange was sensible. The admission that the company struggled to define itself is more revealing than any of the brand language, and a logo cannot answer that question on its own.

In short: A rainbow for the listing day.
