## The rebrand, explained

OpenAI grew from a research lab into a consumer company with ChatGPT faster than its identity could keep up. Its design leads told Wallpaper the brand had been presented haphazardly, a jumble of fonts, marks and colors with no clear strategy. The February 2025 rebrand was the first serious attempt to fix that, with a stated aim of feeling more organic and more human without losing technical authority.

The centerpiece is OpenAI Sans, a bespoke typeface made with ABC Dinamo that mixes geometric precision with rounded, approachable details. It now sets the wordmark, whose O has a perfectly round outside and a deliberately imperfect inside. The blossom symbol, originally drawn by co-founders Greg Brockman and Ilya Sutskever, was redrawn so subtly that The Verge noted you need a side-by-side to see the slightly larger center and cleaner lines. A new palette and grid round it out, plus the emotive point, a pulsing blue disc that signals the AI responding. The point is programmed rather than animated; Moeller described it as ChatGPT's voice.

The work was led in-house by head of design Veit Moeller and design director Shannon Jager, with Studio Dumbar on motion. Moeller said ChatGPT was used only to help calculate type weights.

Reaction was mostly polite. The Drum, noting the launch landed a week after DeepSeek overtook ChatGPT as the most downloaded free app on Apple's store, found the design community largely positive but quoted 20Something's Will Thacker calling the branding conservative for a product this groundbreaking. MobileSyrup made the blunter point that the result does not look much different from what came before. Elsewhere the complaint was that the pulsing point and motion carried most of the identity, leaving the static system thinner.

Wallpaper's long interview filled in the method. The team said OpenAI had presented itself haphazardly, with six or seven typefaces and a jumble of marks across products, and the brief was to feel more organic and human without losing authority. Everything grew from the point, a black dot standing for the cursor and the origin of ChatGPT's reply, which also set the grid and the round forms of the typeface; even the O is a perfect circle outside but deliberately imperfect inside. The blossom mark, first drawn in 2016, was refined and would be used more sparingly, with the wordmark taking the lead. ChatGPT, the designers said, helped only with calculating type weights.

This is housekeeping more than reinvention, and that is fine. The type is the real upgrade. The open question is whether a symbol most people cannot distinguish from its predecessor was worth redrawing at all, or whether the effort mostly went into the parts users never notice.

In short: A disciplined clean-up whose best idea is a typeface, not a logo.
