## The rebrand, explained

Few clubs are as tied to their city as Olympique de Marseille, and few crests carry as much emotion. On 8 April 2026 the club unveiled a replacement for the badge its shirts had worn since 2004. TF1 Info, reporting with AFP, said it was the 12th logo since the club's founding in 1899 and the product of nearly 24 months of work. It will appear on the men's and women's shirts from the following season.

The club's leaders framed it as a necessity rather than a whim. Interim president Alban Juster called it an important moment and described a new identity rooted in the history of Marseille, a bridge between past and future. Director general Alessandro Antonello was more direct: after twenty two years it had to be done because the world had changed. When the old logo was drawn, he said, there were no smartphones; the club lived in a physical world, and now everything is digital. TF1 Info added that the club hopes the crest will help grow its brand and commercial networks as television rights income falls.

Visually, the badge is rounder and cleaner. TF1 Info described an M held within a double ring that forms the O, in a darker Bleu Marseille replacing the old sky blue. Le Figaro reported that the gold star for the 1993 European title and the motto Droit au But remain, and quoted the club saying the design is not a free interpretation but a blend of several periods of its visual history: the white ring from the 1973 logo, the M structure from 1899, the curves of 1986 and the double ring of 1993. The club's own branding page speaks of a clear geometric structure for strength and legibility, with an M that unfolds freely to evoke water, wind and the fire of the city. TF1 Info noted the motto and star will not necessarily appear on all merchandise.

Supporters were not convinced. TF1 Info reported a very mixed reception, mocking posts comparing the badge to a German car maker's roundel, nicknames like Olympique de Volkswagen, and a petition accusing the club of putting a communication strategy ahead of identity. Antonello responded that people would see how beautiful it was once it was on the shirt.

The Volkswagen jokes are cheap but not wrong: a single letter in a double circle is a familiar formula, and the result does feel more like a corporate roundel than a football crest. Yet the archival logic is genuinely thoughtful, and a cleaner mark will work far better on phones, the very argument the club made. Football fans rarely welcome a new badge. The deciding factor will be whether it gathers memories, and that depends on what happens on the pitch.

In short: A roundel built from five eras.
