## The rebrand, explained

NTT announced the change on 9 May 2025, ahead of its results briefing. The company said that 40 years after privatisation in 1985, its business had spread from fixed line to mobile, IT, real estate and energy at home and abroad, and the gap between the founding name, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation, and what it actually does had grown large. From 1 July, subject to shareholder approval on 19 June, it would be NTT, Inc., the abbreviation already used widely in Japan and overseas. Asked what NTT stands for now, the company said it has no particular meaning.

The logo change is deliberately small. The Dynamic Loop, a single curved line from 1985 whose small upper loop represents absorbing the voices of customers and society, is kept as the symbol of the whole group. ITmedia's Rintaro Kaneko described it as the telephone cord like mark at the heart of the NTT logo. The logotype adopts the rounded font already used in global markets, and both the loop and the letters turn blue for a sense of unity, replacing black. At the press conference, president Akira Shimada explained that the font is NTT DATA's, used with the loop overseas since October 2022, so the company was in effect importing its global identity back to Japan.

The new design extends across the group. ITmedia reported that NTT DOCOMO would apply its established red to the Dynamic Loop, while NTT East, NTT West and NTT Communications adopt the new logo in stages. Several subsidiaries also changed names, including NTT Communications becoming NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS.

For a company of NTT's size this is commendably restrained. The loop is one of the few Japanese corporate symbols with real recognition, and keeping it was obvious. Unifying the group behind one mark and one blue fixes a long-standing muddle, and the DOCOMO red exception is a sensible concession to the brand consumers actually use. The cost is character. Swapping the heavy black slab letters for a soft rounded corporate font makes NTT look like every other global technology firm. An abbreviation that officially means nothing, set in a typeface that says little, is a fitting summary.

In short: Telephone dropped, loop kept, everything blue.
