## The rebrand, explained

Netflix's change of logo in spring 2014 was notable mostly for how quiet it was. CNN reported that the new branding simply started appearing on trailers for Orange Is the New Black and other original series, with no announcement and no reply to press questions.

The first sightings came in May. Business Insider reported that the flat mark was appearing on Netflix's YouTube promos for Orange Is the New Black, Derek and The Killing, spotted by a Reddit user, but not yet on the website, so it might have been a test. It cited Fast Company calling it a boring new logo and mourning the block lettering that gave Netflix the feel of a classic Hollywood studio. By June, The Verge reported, the new emblem had replaced the white-on-red logo on the desktop site as part of a cleaner redesign with a translucent top bar and light greys, flat red text without the heavy drop shadows of its predecessor.

The design change is simple. The old logo set white letters with shadows on a red backdrop, a look that commenters associated with the cinema. The new one flattens it to red letters on a white background. Less depth, less ornament, and far less like a movie theatre.

No designer was credited, and Netflix did not explain its thinking, which CNN contrasted with Yahoo turning its own logo change the previous autumn into a month-long event.

Early reactions were mixed. CNN quoted one Reddit commenter calling it a big downgrade, and another arguing that moving away from a logo that says this service is mostly for movies made sense as Netflix pushed into original TV, but that the revision lost the cinema feel without gaining anything in return. That critique holds up: the 2014 mark was a cleanup, not an idea, and its value was mainly that it would read cleanly on the screens Netflix was moving onto.

The flat wordmark turned out to be step one. In June 2016 Netflix added a separate icon, a red N drawn like a folded ribbon, for app icons and social profiles. The Verge stressed the wordmark itself was not changing, and Digiday found the reviews mixed again. The pairing of a flat wordmark with a compact N became the template for how Netflix appears on screens.

In short: A sensible flattening that Netflix seemed embarrassed to explain, and that it largely outgrew.
