## The rebrand, explained

Mozilla rebuilt its brand in 2024 around Reclaim the Internet, a strategy it developed with DesignStudio in 2023. The aim was to make the nonprofit-backed organization behind Firefox feel like an activist voice for a healthier internet, able to speak to audiences that Mozilla describes as running from grassroots to government.

Chief marketing officer Lindsey O'Brien said Mozilla had too long been mistaken for the Firefox company, and that the rebrand was meant to bring its wider work out of the shadows under a single message: reclaim the internet.

The new symbol is a flag. It is assembled from the M of Mozilla, with one pixel displaced to reveal a wink at the Tyrannosaurus rex symbol originally drawn by Shepard Fairey. The wordmark is cut from a bespoke semi-slab typeface with custom characters, an evolution of Mozilla's existing slab serif that, in Mozilla's words, stands out in a sea of tech sans. The type family includes Mozilla Text, engineered for clarity and to reduce ambiguity between glyphs. Color starts with black and white, extended by saturated green, pink and orange, the last a nod to Firefox; the firetruck red of the old T-rex did not return.

Mozilla, Creative Boom and The Verge all credit Jones Knowles Ritchie, with Lisa Smith as global executive creative director; Mozilla and Creative Boom credit DesignStudio with the 2023 strategy.

Mozilla brand head Amy Bebbington told The Verge the system, named Grassroots to Government, had to speak to everyone from coders to officials to everyday users, and that the brand would roll out across surfaces gradually. Mozilla president Mark Surman said the flag could transform into an ASCII-art take on the dinosaur. Weeks later the context soured: The Verge reported in November 2024 that the Mozilla Foundation had laid off about 30 percent of its staff and eliminated its advocacy and global programs divisions, an awkward fit for a brand built on activism.

Few tech brands still commit to a serif, and the semi-slab gives Mozilla a voice that reads more like a publisher than a platform, which suits an organization that wants to argue. The flag is solid, and the T-rex wink is the right size of in-joke: invisible to most, a reward for those who know.

In short: A slab-serif activist in a sea of tech sans. Distinct, and fittingly opinionated.
