## The rebrand, explained

In March 2022 Mozilla's developer documentation site, MDN Web Docs, launched a redesign. Mozilla Hacks explained that work began in mid-2021 to create a clean and inviting website that makes navigating its 44,000 articles as easy as possible, after five years without a comprehensive review of how core content was presented. Over that time the site had grown organically, with more than 45,000 contributors, and the user experience had become inconsistent.

XDA Developers described the result: more consistent colours and theming, layout improvements, a dark mode toggle, in-page navigation that stays accessible while scrolling and clearer browser compatibility charts. It also reported a new logo, one of eight options in a round of community voting: an M monogram with an underscore at the end, hinting that this is a site that helps with coding. The logo was designed by Luc Doucedame.

The underscore is the smart detail. It reads as a blinking cursor, which tells developers exactly what the site is for without spelling it out, and it gives a plain monogram a small, characterful twist.

XDA's writer admitted missing the old Mozilla dinosaur, and the nostalgia is understandable. But MDN serves developers on every browser, not just Firefox users, and a neutral M makes it feel like shared infrastructure rather than a Mozilla property.

The Mozilla Hacks post explained the logo process. Over a sixteen-year history, from wiki to a static site backed by GitHub, MDN had grown organically and its experience had become inconsistent. When the team decided a new logo was due, it narrowed the options to eight and asked the community to vote, receiving more than 10,000 votes in three days for what it called the MDN people's choice. Letting developers pick the mark of their own reference manual is fitting for a site built by more than 45,000 contributors, and it buys goodwill that no agency presentation ever could.

Letting the community vote is a fitting choice for a resource built by tens of thousands of contributors. It also raises the stakes: when the users pick the logo, they have fewer grounds to complain about it.

In short: An M with a cursor.
