## The rebrand, explained

McAfee has a problem most brands would envy and none would choose. People know it, and they trust it, but they think it does one thing. Adweek reported that the company's own research found 68 percent of consumers associate McAfee with antivirus protection, while far fewer knew about its scam detection or dark web monitoring. Chief marketing officer Stephanie Fried put it plainly to the magazine: after almost 40 years McAfee wins on trust in its brand tracker, but the downside is being known for its heritage.

The rebrand, launched on Sep 29, 2026, was tied to a new product. McAfee's press release described an all in one safety service that protects personal information, finances, connections and devices, built around a Safer Than Safe brand promise and pitched at a moment of rising worry about AI driven scams. In a company blog post Fried wrote that for many the McAfee name is still synonymous with antivirus, and that people's digital lives no longer fit inside a single device.

Her post sets out the idea in pairs: safe is reacting, safer is preventing; safe is worrying about tomorrow, safer is enjoying today. The aim, she wrote, was to give consumers confidence instead of building on decades of fear tied to scams, malware and alerts, which shaped a brand that is brighter, simpler and more human.

The visual consequences follow from that. Members of McAfee's creative team wrote at launch that the company had defined its category as safety, not cybersecurity, and rebuilt the identity on the equity of the shield. Red, the color of warning, gave way to a glowing safety orange as the core brand color. Inside the app the palette doubles as a status system, with green meaning all is well and orange meaning action is needed. The team also stressed that the product came first and the brand followed.

This is a smart diagnosis. Security software has long sold through fear, and red shields with exclamation marks were the visual language of that bargain. Moving to orange keeps urgency while dropping the alarm, and tying color to app status gives it a job rather than just a mood. The risk is that safety is a softer, more crowded word than cybersecurity, and a warm palette can read as generic consumer tech. Keeping the shield is the right hedge: it holds onto the trust Fried says the brand already owns while the rest of the system tries to show it does more than antivirus.

In short: From alarm red to safety orange.
