## The rebrand, explained

Ballmer revealed the identity on Conan on 17 June 2015, and the team handed out T-shirts with the new look at more than 32 locations across Southern California the next day.

The team said the primary logo keeps the legacy red, white and blue "while adding black to provide a modern edge." The curved lines in the wordmark stand for "the horizon of the ocean as seen from the bridge of a Clipper ship", a nod to the nautical name.

The LAC monogram, a blue C wrapped around LA, was meant to be "literally embracing the city", with the stacked LA shaped like a basketball court.

In short: Script on a ball became a block wordmark and a monogram.
