## The rebrand, explained

Industrial Light & Magic has a better origin story than most brands: the effects house George Lucas founded in the 1970s, with a logo of a wand wielding magician framed by a gear. ILM's chief creative officer Rob Bredow explained in the company's announcement that every logo since has borrowed from that original, illustrated by Michael Pangrazio and finalised in a painting by Drew Struzan. By 2023, he said, the company and the industry had changed so much over eighteen years that it was time for an identity reflecting the global studio ILM had become, with six studios from San Francisco to Mumbai.

The process was unusually inclusive. ILM said the fourteen month project involved input from more than a thousand employees, and one remark from executive creative director John Knoll became a guiding phrase: he wanted to bring the magic back to the logo. General manager Janet Lewin tied the work to the mission statement, visual storytellers who create iconic moments to inspire the imagination, and to a culture of collaboration and risk taking.

Variety, reporting the change alongside the renaming of the immersive unit ILMxLAB to ILM Immersive, carried the same reasoning from Lewin: the goal was to update ILM's branding holistically, looking forward while honouring its legacy. Bredow told Variety he hoped people could feel the through line from the 1970s to today, with the new logo pointing toward future innovations. Vicki Dobbs Beck, head of immersive content, explained that ILMxLAB had been named as an experimental lab nearly eight years earlier and was always expected to grow into a name that captured its focus.

The design, according to ILM, uses negative space inside a gear silhouette to suggest a lightbulb, both elements from the original Pangrazio and Struzan art. A swoosh trailing a spark of magic stands for the global spread of the company's talent. The wordmark is set in a bold customised serif meant to echo the abbreviated type of the original logo. Sub brands including ILM Art, ILM StageCraft, ILM Technoprops and ILM Immersive received matching marks, and the wider system draws on cinematic colours from past projects.

This is respectful, intelligent heritage work. Hiding the lightbulb inside the gear compresses decades of iconography into a single glyph that works at small sizes, and the spark adds just enough whimsy to justify the word magic. What is lost is the magician himself, the most charming element of the old art, and the new mark is more corporate than cinematic. But for a studio now competing on technology as much as craft, a cleaner system across sub brands is the right call.

In short: The magic, compressed into a glyph.
