## The rebrand, explained

Hilton's corporate rebrand arrived quietly, inside a loyalty announcement. On 1 February 2017 the company's press release about Hilton Honors noted that, as part of the change, it was unveiling a new corporate identity and logo and would no longer use Worldwide in its name. From that day it was simply Hilton.

Business Travel News put the rebrand in its commercial setting. Hilton dropped Worldwide from its official name, introduced a new logo and renamed its loyalty programme from Hilton HHonors to Hilton Honors, alongside new perks rolling out through April: members could spend points on Amazon, pool points with up to ten friends and family, and combine cash and points for stays. Hilton's release added that the new corporate identity came as the company was more simplified and streamlined than ever, after spinning off its real estate and timeshare businesses, and that Honors then had 60 million members.

The timing followed a restructuring. Early in 2017 Hilton spun off its real-estate and timeshare businesses, leaving a leaner company focused on managing and franchising its 14 hotel brands, from Waldorf Astoria and Conrad to Hampton and Tru. A shorter name fitted a more focused business.

The new corporate logo is a serif Hilton wordmark enclosed in a black-bordered frame, replacing the old Hilton Worldwide mark with its embossed, arched H monogram. The identity uses the Loew typeface, set alongside a handwritten script, Simple Joys, which the design site El Poder de las Ideas read as an attempt to soften corporate formality with a sense of hospitality. The loyalty programme went from HHonors, with its awkward double H, to Honors.

Hilton's brands kept their own identities: the Hilton Hotels & Resorts flagship retained its refreshed 2010 identity in Hilton Blue. The 2017 mark sits above them as the parent.

It is a sensible tidy-up rather than a statement. Dropping Worldwide and the extra H removed clutter that had built up over the years, and a framed serif signals heritage, which a company founded by Conrad Hilton in 1919 can claim. But the frame makes the mark look more like a label than a logo.

In short: A parent company tidies its name and lets the hotel brands do the talking.
