## The rebrand, explained

Granola, started in 2023, is an AI notepad for meetings that captures notes so users can stay present. Popular with Silicon Valley executives, it wanted to become a recognized brand for knowledge workers, and hired London agency Ragged Edge. The category, Design Week and Creative Boom noted, was full of sleek, frictionless, impersonal design; Ragged Edge went the other way.

Strategy director Christy Madden said productivity apps fail to live up to the name and feel like another layer in the way of work, while Granola makes space to focus on the ideas that matter. The line became "progress over process", capturing the messy middle of work rather than fetishizing efficiency.

The logo is an organic, freeform G that looks like a quick sketch on a napkin, signaling that growth is rarely linear. Its creative director said it was meant to feel slightly imperfect and unmistakably human, an antidote to the category. A bespoke script typeface was digitized from co-founder Sam Stephenson's handwriting, with hundreds of characters and multiple variants per letter so text shifts as it is used. A warm, earthy green replaced the bright RGB hues typical of tech, and an illustrative style called "findings" layers textures, photography and color. Billboards in San Francisco, New York and London followed, including "Being present is a power move".

The co-founder's own post was disarmingly frank. The original identity, it said, had been thrown together in a few frantic days, and shown to a stranger the old homepage looked like any other SaaS company. The team wanted a London partner and was delighted to find the studio's designers were already heavy Granola users. The brand, the post said, was simply catching up to what Granola already was: a calming presence, like a trusty notebook, for people whose calendars are packed to the edges.

Design Week reported that the identity trended on X on launch day, bringing the highest daily downloads in the company's history. Citing Ramp data, it said Granola became the world's second-fastest-growing software brand the next month, then raised $125m at a $1.5bn valuation within three months.

Results like that have many causes, but the design deserves real credit. Handwriting is an old trick, yet in AI, where everything glows, a human scrawl reads as a position, not a style.

In short: A G sketched on a napkin.
