## The rebrand, explained

Google's previous Workspace icons drew criticism for looking alike, with the four company colours mandated and several logos placed in the same page shaped container. 9to5Google's Abner Li wrote that the 2026 revamp addresses that criticism directly: everything is more distinct in colour and shape.

The new icons began appearing on 18 May 2026, the day before Google I/O, first in the app launcher on Google websites and on Chrome's New Tab page. The Verge's Stevie Bonifield described soft gradients fading from lighter to darker shades rather than flat tones, similar to the redesigned Google logo of a year earlier, along with rounded corners and overhauled shapes. Google's Workspace Updates blog confirmed the change on 26 May, listing Gmail, Calendar, Chat, Meet, Drive, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Vids, Keep, Forms, Voice, Sites and Tasks, with no admin or user controls and no change to functionality. By 4 June, 9to5Google reported, the rollout was complete on Android, iOS and the web.

The details are where it gets interesting. Gmail is now the only app keeping all four Google colours; Drive uses three; the rest each have one main hue, so Chat, Meet and Calendar went from rainbow to single colour. The Workspace page container is gone for most apps, so Keep is now just a yellow light bulb and Drive lost its spot of red and gained rounded corners. Docs, Sheets and Slides kept their colours and approach, but Sheets and Slides now sit in landscape orientation, which, as The Verge and Android Authority both noted, matches how people actually use them. Officially, 9to5Google reported, the logos reflect the Gemini era.

Google's stated goal was to give every app a more distinct identity while staying recognisable on your screen, and it largely succeeds. Dropping the four colour mandate is an admission that the previous system put corporate consistency above usability. Android Authority's Edgar Cervantes called the icons weird looking and said people were divided, while conceding they beat many of those they replaced. The gradients are the weak point: they date the set to a moment of AI branding, and in five years they will look as of their time as the flat set does now.

In short: Distinct at last, gradients and all.
