## The rebrand, explained

Gemini, the assistant formerly called Bard, had a strange problem. Google had helped make the four-pointed sparkle the shorthand for AI, and by 2025 every competitor used one, so its once-distinctive brand codes had become generic AI language. The brief, in the words of the identity's own project description, was to make Gemini the Google magic for a new generation and to tie it clearly to the Google ecosystem.

The key move was on the mark itself. 9to5Google reported in July 2025 that the old spark, very sharp and prone to collapsing into a thin line at small sizes, had been softened into a rounded, more inviting shape. It is now filled with a directional gradient of Google's four colors, blue on the right morphing to red at the top, yellow at the left and green below, which makes it read as Google before it reads as AI.

Around it sits a larger system. The design team set out to reclaim the spark as an invitation to explore, activating it in motion that reveals content, and built the identity around the interplay of human input and AI output. Oversized UI elements, layouts meant to turn chaos into clarity, a bespoke illustration style open to artist collaborations and a verbal identity with three voices, for the user, the product and the brand, complete it. Google's own design team wrote that, beyond the spark, dynamic cues were meant to help users discover and build trust in a product that keeps changing.

The logo appeared on Gemini's website first, with the apps updated later.

9to5Google's close reading identified the practical fix. The old sparkle's points were so sharp they collapsed into a thin line at small sizes, so Google softened them into something more inviting. The color moved from a single blue gradient to Google's full palette, blue at the right morphing to red at the top, yellow at the left and green below. That is less a new idea than an absorption: the AI product that began with its own look was being folded back into the family colors of the company that makes it.

Rounding the spark fixes a real legibility problem, and the four-color fill is the smartest thing here: it turns the industry's shared cliche back into a Google asset. It is a defensive design, though. The shape is still the sparkle every rival uses, and only the color stops it from being generic.

In short: A softened spark that only becomes ownable once Google's four colors fill it.
