## The rebrand, explained

France Télévisions changed its look early on Monday 29 January 2018. Stratégies reported that every channel in the group switched to a new logo, new on air graphics, new trailers and new evening menus at once. The volet, or shutter, logo introduced in 2002 gave way to a dot coloured for each channel, and the group's own logo became France.tv. BFM Business, citing AFP, called it the first large scale move since the shutter look was adopted in 2002, beyond a small refresh in 2012 when the overseas channels arrived.

Each channel uses the dot in its own way, brand director Philippe Deloeuvre told AFP. France 2, as the flagship, makes the single dot its own; France 3 plays it as a triptych, France 4 makes it playful, France 5 multiplies it as a diversity of points of view, and France Ô multiplies the dots to show its diversity. The colours stay the same but become brighter to travel better across digital screens, and the type moves from Heldustry to the rounder Brown, already used by franceinfo. Sports programming switched to dots and capital letter titles from the Six Nations on 3 February.

According to both outlets, the brand architecture was designed by Joosnabhan and the on air design and channel graphics by Movement. BFM put the design cost at 90,000 euros plus 50,000 euros for usage rights, with the full cost only measurable later. The project took two years and involved around ten people and each channel's art direction team. The dots would also appear on cameras and vehicles as equipment was replaced.

Deloeuvre's explanation was direct. The group's brand system was not designed for the open digital world, he said, and there was no coherence between its digital footprint and its channels; wherever a programme is watched, the audience should know it comes from France Télévisions. Stratégies summarised the main goal as more coherence between the channels and the digital offer.

The shutter logos had become a museum piece, so a change was overdue. The dot is the right kind of idea: small, repeatable and tied directly to franceinfo, which gives the group a family resemblance it never had. For France 2 specifically, though, a dot after a number is thin. It risks making the flagship channel look like a menu item. The strength is the system, not the mark, and that is a reasonable trade for a broadcaster living on phones.

In short: A dot replaces the shutters.
