## The rebrand, explained

In July 2019 Transform magazine spotted a new brand at DocuSign, the San Francisco company behind electronic signatures. The old wordmark was a blue, black and white composition with a sans serif Docu and a cursive Sign. The new one is monochrome and sets the entire name in the sans serif.

Transform noticed the rollout was patchy. The identity had appeared on the website and social media, but the online brand guidelines had not been updated and the mobile app still carried the original branding, so the change was presumably still rolling out. The magazine tied the move to a period of growth in revenue, staff and customers, and judged that the new approach seemed digital ready and gave a cleaner result across the website and social presence.

DocuSign's own trademark guide now describes the logo as its most prominent brand element, meant to convey the evolution of the organisation and telegraph that the company is confident, human and contemporary. The guide supplies black and white versions, black on light backgrounds and white on dark, and asks users not to recreate the mark or place it next to an eSignature competitor such as Adobe Sign.

The old logo was a literal pun: the word Sign written as if signed. It was charming on a business card and awkward everywhere else, two typefaces and three colours fighting inside one short name. Dropping the script was the right call for a company that had become infrastructure for contracts.

The guide is stricter still on craft. It warns that the logo is not simply a typeface: each letter has been carefully crafted and positioned in relation to the others, so it must not be altered or recreated. Clear space is built into every asset, the mark is visually rather than technically centred, and misuse listed includes non-approved colours, busy backgrounds and improper capitalisation. That much protocol around a plain black wordmark is telling. The fussing happens at a level users will never see, which is exactly where a quiet logo has to earn its keep.

The cost is personality. A plain black sans serif wordmark is safe, legible and almost anonymous, and it relies on the product's ubiquity to be recognised. For DocuSign that is a fair bet. When your name has become a verb in offices, you no longer need to illustrate it.

In short: The signature, unsigned.
