## The rebrand, explained

After the pandemic Discord had drifted into being a general community chat app. In 2024 the company said it was narrowing its focus to helping people deepen friendships around games, and its brand refresh followed. The brief, as one of the studios involved described it, was to age up the brand and dial up the gaming feel, without throwing away characters people already loved.

Chief executive Jason Citron announced the shift in a May 2024 post for Discord's ninth anniversary, after telling The Verge's Decoder that 95 percent of users play games. VP of marketing Mike Polner told IGN the brand update came from time spent with thousands of users, which showed games were still what brought people in. The plan was product as much as brand: faster access to conversations and more reliable voice, video and streaming.

There is no new logo. The wordmark remains a custom adaptation of Ginto Nord, the chunky geometric-humanist face from Dinamo. The change is in everything around it. The mascots, Wumpus the purple critter, Clyde the robot and Nelly the hamster, were reworked so they can be rendered in 2D, 3D or low-poly and sit together naturally. Wumpus got a Discord-branded white puffer jacket, Clyde and Nelly got scratches and sticker details, and Clyde's head hides an NES controller port. Early references, that studio says, leaned toward Arcane and Into the Spider-Verse.

The work was split between Discord's in-house team and outside specialists. Discord's creative lead says the company deliberately moved away from full-service agencies toward specialist studios.

Users mostly made jokes. Creative Bloq found the new line, group chat that's all fun and games, inviting endless all-fun-and-games-until replies, alongside complaints that the colors had changed again and grown more corporate; the brand blue went another shade darker.

The Verge put the visual update in strategic context. The chief executive told users Discord would narrow from a broad community chat app to one that helps people deepen friendships around games and shared interests, reversing the general purpose pivot of 2020, after layoffs of 17 percent of staff and Senate scrutiny over child safety. He had said 95 percent of users play games. The refreshed illustrations and icons arrived alongside faster navigation and better voice and video. Here the identity follows the business back home, which is the most honest reason to redesign.

This is a character brand learning to grow up without going corporate. The 3D cast is richer and more gamer-literate than the flat cartoons it replaced, and keeping the wordmark avoided needless churn. The puffer jacket is either inspired or try-hard depending on your age, which is probably the intended audience test.

In short: Same logo, older mascots, sharper focus on games.
