## The rebrand, explained

By 2022 crypto had an image problem: memes, finance bros and intimidating tech. Coinbase wanted to reach a wider audience than the usual crypto crowd, and its brand had to build recognition while leaving room to speak to new users.

The symbol sits somewhere between a C and a circle, its simplicity meant to express Coinbase's claim to be the easiest way into the cryptoeconomy. The studio said it was the widest logo exploration it had done, hundreds of concepts, partly because the mark had to survive legal reviews worldwide. The blue was brightened. A custom family, Coinbase Sans, covers 36 styles, over 29,000 glyphs and more than 200 Latin-script languages. The system draws on transit signage for clarity, while the motion design suggests constant but intentional movement, a nod to markets that never close.

San Francisco studio Moniker designed it, as both It's Nice That and Creative Review reported.

The launch came weeks after Coinbase's February 2022 Super Bowl ad, built around a bouncing QR code. It's Nice That framed the identity as shrugging off crypto's meme aesthetics, and Creative Review emphasised its aim to make crypto approachable to people outside the community.

Creative Review's interview with the studio set out the balancing act. Coinbase was growing fast and saw itself as the most trusted, easiest platform in crypto, but its identity did not say so. The brief was to carry the energy of a new financial world while signalling security to people who were not the usual crypto crowd. Hundreds of concepts later, the answer was radical simplicity, deliberately bold against rivals that leaned into an undesigned, meme-like look, and careful not to move the app icon too far. The challenge, as the studio put it, was to be trusted without being stodgy.

The positioning is the point, and the design delivers it. Against crypto brands that leaned into an undesigned, meme-like look, Coinbase looks like a bank you could trust with your mother's savings. Whether that should be the goal for crypto is another question, but as an identity this is clear, calm and unusually well built.

In short: Crypto dressed as public infrastructure. Deliberately boring, impressively executed.
