## The rebrand, explained

Bumble launched in 2014 on one twist: in heterosexual matches, women send the first message, within 24 hours, or the match disappears. A decade later the twist had become a burden. Creative Review noted a growing feeling that it left women doing the heavy lifting, and Adweek framed the refresh as an attempt to reach generations fatigued with online dating. It was the first major initiative under new CEO Lidiane Jones, who had taken over from founder Whitney Wolfe Herd.

Everything, from the identity to the app and campaign, was led by the in-house agency, Bumble Creative Studio. The logo was tweaked to look more like a beehive: Design Compass described the honeycomb symbol losing its hexagonal outline and inner fill, with the wordmark changed from bumble to Bumble and made more prominent than the symbol. New typography, illustrations and palettes completed the system; Design Compass found the mix of dark and bright yellows confusing about which is the main color.

The product change carried the idea. Bumble surveyed 6,138 women aged 23 to 35, and nearly half said more ways to start a conversation would help, so Opening Moves lets women set an icebreaker that matches answer. Chief marketing officer Selby Drummond said the brand had always taken its lead from the women in its community.

The global campaign, in ten countries, leaned into exhaustion: a woman joining a sort of dating rehabilitation program, and posters such as never date another walking Clapton meme again.

The campaign is sharp and self-aware. The identity is the weak link: opening up the hive and capitalizing the name makes Bumble tidier but less distinctive, and in a category where every app is chasing the same friendly look, tidy is not enough.

In short: A witty campaign and a smart feature, carried by a blander logo.
