## The rebrand, explained

Bandai Namco's previous logo was a monument to a merger, expressing, as the company itself put it, the fusion of Bandai and Namco when the two integrated. In October 2021 the group announced it would replace its mission and vision with a single statement of Purpose, and introduce a new logo to embody it, both from the start of its mid term plan in April 2022. Nintendo Life confirmed the switch at the beginning of April, with the mark appearing across the website, products, YouTube and social accounts.

The Purpose, Fun for All into the Future, says Bandai Namco exists to share dreams, fun and inspiration with people around the world and to connect people and societies through entertainment. The company said the wording came from internal and external surveys and discussions among employees worldwide. The business reasoning was more pointed: in an intensely competitive, fast changing global market with diverse consumer needs, it wanted to strengthen an ALL BANDAI NAMCO concept in every region while keeping each group company's individuality, and ultimately raise the group brand's value worldwide.

That is why the logo's reach matters as much as its look. Every company with Bandai Namco in its name uses it, and in principle group companies without the name also carry it on products and services, gathering every label under one mark. The design puts the name inside a speech bubble, a fukidashi, which the company said expresses its potential to connect with people and inspire them, and which also nods to the global popularity of Japanese manga. It stands, Bandai Namco said, for a determination to talk with and connect to fans worldwide. Magenta was chosen to represent diversity, to feel bright and fun, and to be easy to reproduce.

Nintendo Life's readers split predictably, some calling it bland and others imagining characters on game boxes shouting the company name.

The second reaction is closer to the truth. A speech bubble is a simple, even obvious device, but it is genuinely ownable for a company built on anime, manga and games, and it turns every product into a character speaking the brand. Swapping a corporate fusion symbol for a fan facing idea is the right direction. The execution is plain, and that plainness is useful for a mark that has to sit on everything from toys to software.

In short: The brand learns to speak in speech bubbles.
